The sounds of snores from the next cubical over are because Jerry had to take that old, stale compliance course. Anyone can phone it in, click "next", and answer "C" to every multiple choice question. But that video choose-your-own adventure course? Jerry's going to make decisions and see immediate feedback and consequences for his choices. He might even take the course again and again to see what other outcomes he could get, giving him a fully-detailed understanding of the subject matter with just one lesson! Snores or engagement: which would you choose?

In this session, you’ll explore how to design a video choose-your-own adventure (CYOA) course for when "correct/incorrect" text isn't enough. Through creating a CYOA course, you’ll learn how to significantly increase engagement while reinforcing learning objectives. You’ll find out how using a decision tree approach can give your audience real-time feedback. You’ll then look at the development tools you can use to create this kind of video course, as well as how to craft immediate and consequential feedback for the choices people make.

In this session, you will learn:

    • Which tools can be used to create decision trees
    • Development methods to create a CYOA course
    • How to create consequential feedback to user responses
    • How to implement immediate feedback to user responses
    • How to create multiple experiences with the same course, while arriving at the desired objective for each user

    ATD Capabilities covered in session:

    • Instructional Design
    • Technology Application

    The New ATD Capability Model

How do you know you have the right skills and knowledge for a successful career in talent development? In January 2020, ATD published an updated Capability model that captures shifts in society, business, and the talent development profession. Specifically, this session will explore:

    • Process and Methodology of building the ATD Capability Model
    • Building Personal Capability
    • Developing Professional Capability
    • Impacting Organizational Capability
    • Additional Resources

Robots, Automation, and the Future of Human Work

The future vision for robots is one in which robots will act as teammates, partners, and companions for people. This is especially true in domains where robots are expected to fill significant resource and manning needs in the near future (e.g., military, space, healthcare). For instance, in healthcare, robots are expected to provide a major manpower supplement for healthcare professionals who will not be able to meet staffing demands for older adult care. In the New England area of the US alone, the retirement of the baby boom generation is expected to increase the number of older adults needing care by as much as 30% in the next decade, while the number of healthcare professionals entering into that workforce is only expected to increase by as much as 8%. In this talk, I will present how roboticists and other automation scientists are thinking about how to make robots better teammates, companions, and partners for people and invite discussion of how this will change the future of human work.

    ATD Capabilities covered in session:

    • Future Readiness
    • Change Management
    • Technology Application
    • Learning Sciences

    Presenter Information

    Elizabeth Phillips

Dr. Elizabeth “Beth” Phillips is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Leadership and the Warfighter Effectiveness Research Center at the United States Air Force Academy. She completed her Ph.D. in Applied Experimental and Human Factors Psychology at the University of Central Florida in 2016, and her Post-Doctoral training in the Humanity Centered Robotics Initiative at Brown University in 2018. Broadly, her expertise is in human interactions with robots, autonomous systems, and related technologies like augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR). She studies how we can design these systems and leverage technologies like AR/VR to make robots better teammates, partners, and companions for people in the near future.

Leveraging Gamification to Enhance Learning and Business Outcomes

Gamification: It’s a great way to increase learner engagement. But can it help your training program scale the rungs of Kirkpatrick’s 4 Levels? Yes! The key is to use the principles of instructional design and performance improvement to guide your gaming decisions. In this session, Kerri will share a case study to illustrate this decision process. She will include hands-on activities to help participants incorporate gamification into their training designs.

After this session, participants will be able to:

    • List the benefits of training gamification
    • Discuss key connections between Bloom’s Taxonomy, Kirkpatrick’s measurement framework, and effective game design for adult learners
    • Select gamified training elements to enhance desired learning and business outcomes
    • Identify resources to help trainers successfully apply gaming techniques
